Plot summary

A research team from an electronics company move into an old Victorian house to start work on finding a new recording medium. When team member Jill Greeley witnesses a ghost, team director Peter Brock decides not only to analyse the apparition, which he believes is a psychic impression trapped in a stone wall (dubbed a "stone tape"), but to exorcise it too - with terrifying results...

A team of corporate scientists move into an

A team of corporate scientists move into an old house to develop a cutting-edge recording medium. Some of them hear and see the dying moments of former inhabitants in the house’s basement. They wonder if its stone walls can record and replay events and make it their mission to find out. Writer Nigel Kneale’s creative fusing of horror and science fiction is fun, but more impressive and enduring are the characters he crafts. Jill, the team’s computer scientist, is the most susceptible to the ghosts and knows by instinct that there are things in that basement they should not investigate. But Peter, her lover and boss, is determined to succeed and dismisses her as neurotic. As he pushes on, their relationship deteriorates. Jill’s foreboding alienates her and there is a certain kind of grim humour in watching the fallout of Brock’s reckless ambition. Age may have eroded its ability to scare, but as in all good horror and science fiction, The Stone Tape is a story about people at its core.

Absolute early seventies classic. The then fashionable computer

Absolute early seventies classic. The then fashionable computer typeface. The beginnings of the rise of Japanese commerce spreading westward. The incredible paucity of technological equipment then available compared to today's ‘taken for granted" technology. It feels modern despite that. The cast is driven by three main characters, Michael Bryant, Jane Asher and Iain Cuthbertson. The film retains a scary edge especially the end. To my way of thinking this is not remotely a corny sci fi scare in any way. At the time of its release it would have been a powerful film. As is the case with all classics, it still retains the power to grab and hold you. The soundtrack and slightly awkward camera angles simply accentuate the mood. Janes Asher adds a powerful layer of psycho drama which plays well with Brock's fanatical desire to make a commercial technological breakthrough. A very good film indeed.
