Kelsey's “I got an axe wound” is perhaps

Kelsey's “I got an axe wound” is perhaps the best one-liner to come out of a horror movie this decade lol. For this line alone, I highly recommend this hilarious movie to all lovers of a goood horror comedy. Trust me, you'll love it.

A BIG lack of genuine zombie action for a Romero

I was rather excited for Queens of the Dead since I absolutely love zombie movies, and this one is made by the daughter of George A. Romero. Need I say more? In 2024, a movie about a group of drag queens fighting vampires called Slay was released, and it was pretty enjoyable, so I expected something similar here but with zombies. What could go wrong?Sadly, it turns out quite a few things can go wrong, as this movie ended up being very different from what I expected. The acting is very questionable, and only a few members of the cast manage to deliver a decent performance. Most of the acting feels either very over the top or strangely effortless. Some of the characters are somewhat fun, but they are nowhere near as memorable as the characters in Slay, for example. Here, the characters lean heavily into stereotypes and still fail to stand out or leave a lasting impression. The pacing is also an issue, as the movie becomes quite boring in several moments. The most enjoyable part is probably the final ten minutes, when the film finally loosens up and delivers some actual zombie carnage. The comedy rarely works, as a few lines did make me chuckle, but those moments are quickly undercut by exaggerated performances or the movie trying too hard to be funny. In Germany, we would say that some Fingerspitzengefühl was missing, meaning there was a lack of tact in how the comedy was handled by both the cast and the director. All of these issues might have been forgivable if the movie had delivered strong zombie action, but my biggest complaint lies with the zombies themselves. They behave like twelve year olds who were told to pretend to be zombies, exaggerated, stereotypical, and not threatening in the slightest. Obviously, this movie is not aiming for a dark or tense atmosphere and instead focuses on comedy and near parody, but the zombies are handled so poorly that it becomes genuinely irritating. I am not sure if this was a deliberate choice by Tina Romero or if the zombie actors simply lacked proper reference, though since they all behave the same way, it seems like a conscious creative decision.Overall, I was pretty let down, as I expected to have fun but instead left feeling unsatisfied. Do not go into this expecting an enjoyable zombie movie. However, if you are only here for drag queens delivering one liners, this might still work for you. [4,2/10]

A messy but energetic debut

Tina Romero knows she can't outrun her father's lurching legacy, and she's too smart to try. It's legitimately exciting that another Romero is here picking up the torch to deliver more zombie horror, but Queens of the Dead's disinterest in using the genre as an outlet for further commentary is odd. Missing the boat entirely on satirising the idiotic political assertions of its community in a way that would have made George proud, it feels way too heavy-handed and on the nose. Just way too shallow and clichéd, lacking in any form of depth, edge and nuance. I admire the intentions, but a film cannot coast along on those alone. Especially when it stars possibly the most annoying group of characters and performances to ever populate a Romero film, with the sole exception of Katy O'Brian and her biceps, they are constantly throwing shade at each other with some truly dire one-liners, which doesn't make for the best company in the world. Although I did appreciate the Tom Savini cameo. That being said, Tina's style works well enough; it's an energetic and visually engaging debut, but along with the whimsical musical score, it can't tighten the film's already uneven tone and glacial pacing. Unapologetically loud and severely lacking in laughs, tension and zombie mayhem, there's a veneer to Queens of the Dead that should make it far more enthralling, but it just runs out of steam by the end.
