Plot summary

I did enjoy this live-action Hannah-Barbera family comedy

I did enjoy this live-action Hannah-Barbera family comedy about a robot dog helping fight crime, but it was probably more out of 1970s nostalgia than this being an actually good film. Not only does the film feature a campy disco score, goofy looking robotics, you also get Valerie Bertinelli and Conrad "Different Strokes" Bain. There's also Red Buttons & Chuck McCann as the villains and small parts for Larry Bishop and Jim Backus. This film was apparently the first of what was a planned multi-picture deal between Hanna-Barbera and American International Pictures, but after the film flopped, there were no other made, which is too bad because this film had an enjoyably goofy vibe that reminded me a lot of Disney live-action pictures around this time, like "Candleshoe" or "The North Avenue Irregulars."

This super charged super canine Bionic Dog/DynoMutt ripoff is strictly for the dogs... Thumbs wayyy down on this one. ? This is a ridiculous high-concept yarn about talking cyborg dogs battling eachother! And it plays like an extended Alpo commercial; or like Benji on Acid... Shame on Valerie Bertinelli for taking timeout from her busy One Day At a Time Shooting schedule to appear in this trash!... (She admits in interviews it was a mistake!..) And anyone who watches this garbage deserves to be in the doghouse!! WOOF!! ? ? ?

A mostly harmless comedy that is really damn

A mostly harmless comedy that is really damn cheesy with over-the-top acting and a premise that would've worked better as a half-hour cartoon but struggles to find ways to work as a 90-minute-long live-action film. Not to mention a bizarre choice where we hear some bully dog's thoughts despite having no real reason to exist and I'm pretty sure the target audience would figure out by themselves what's happening I these scenes. Probably because this was produced by the same company that brought Scooby-Doo to the world, IDK. The dogs are cute, though. Also, the animated opening credits are the best part of this film, I laughed a few times and they do an okay job with some of the effects and animal training to bring the titular robot dog to life. Would've been decent as a short but as a movie, the premise wears thin. The lack of any major conflict doesn't help. Why Hanna-Barbera thought this would work as a live-action film - their only theatrically released live-action film not based off of any of their IPs - is anybody's guess.
