Next level cyberpunk anime. You may feel a touch lost in this one because it's part two of a trilogy. It brings up various philosophical issues, and has some graphic scenes that are not for everyone. Kind of like if a Masamune Shirow story was directed by Satoshi Kon.
I finally watched this. I dunno if it's this particular version or what, but it seems like some scenes are missing. But whatever. It isn't like this is high-brow cinema. It didn't end the way I expected, but then again, I had very low expectations based on the title. It had a lot of weirdness in the third act that didn't make a lot of sense. But then again, that's a common problem in 70s/80s Japanese exploitation cinema. Realistically, this could have been a damn good movie with a decent script doctor. Ah well. It wasn't wasted time, but I probably won't be revisiting it.
Fans of the manga or anime will be disappointed. It mashes all sorts of plot points into 110 minutes and just leaves fragments hanging with no explanation. (Moro and Maru are cast as adults instead of little girls, which was really weird.) Yuuko was not particularly badly cast and Himawari was okay, but most of the rest except for Spider Spirit were bland and uninteresting. A sad representation of the manga. However I did like the effects and the ending was spot on.
