Sound of the Mountain (Yama no oto) is a 1954 Japanese drama film directed by Mikio Naruse. It is based on the novel The Sound of the Mountain by Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata. It stars Setsuko Hara, Sō Yamamura, Ken Uehara, Yōko Sugi and Chieko Nakakita. It was written by Yoko Mizuki. It was distributed and produced by Toho Company, Limited. The film won the 1954 Mainichi Film Award for Best Actor for the character of Shingo Ogata played by Sō Yamamura. Vision wrote: “I couldn’t keep my eyes off this film. Setsuko Hara out does herself as the wife who is belittled and shamed but keeps going strong. Sō Yamamura perfectly plays the proud parent, while the mother plays the mother who taught her daughter nothing. Four fries for direction, the performances, the production and screenplay.”
