One of maybe 3 films that can truly make me tear up. Brilliant.

This is one of those movies I saw when I was far too young to fully appreciate it, but it left and indelible impression on me and it holds such a special place in my heart. The visual aesthetic is unforgettable, the story is heartbreaking but inspiring, and Robin is wonderful. Highly recommended as a unique movie-going experience, similar to The Cell

Beautiful and deeply emotional. Purportedly inspired, at least in part, by the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg, who claimed to have visited Heaven and Hell in the 18'th century. One of the few films to portray both realms.

Hindsight, and all that, but I wonder how much of the things going through the mind of his character here were actually going through the mind of Robin Williams himself in his later life? Here, he is doctor “Chris” who quite literally collides with “Annie” (Annabella Sciorra) in their boats, and the whirlwind that ensues sees them married and living in the USA. An accident in a road tunnel sees him try to help a stranded driver, but before he can assist he comes a cropper himself and is soon up in heaven being looked after by Cuba Gooding Jnr. So far, it does sound quite heavenly! Unfortunately, “Annie” just cannot handle life without her new husband especially as this is not the first time tragedy has affected her life, and now she is truly bereft. Her solution sees her sent elsewhere and so “Chris” has to convince his new friend “Albert” that - yep - true love conquers all, even in matters of heaven and hell. To prove that very point, he decides to sacrifice his Elysian existence and set off to find her - but that is a journey fraught with emotional pitfalls that build on his memories of her, their family, and of his own frailties. Upon his journey, he is also to have the sagely honesty of “The Tracker” (Max Von Sydow) on his shoulder. Perhaps I’m a bit of a cynic, but though Williams’s effort is engaging, I found this all just a little too soft-focus sentimental. It presents character difficulties and flaws at us, but never ones that we know won’t be resolved, and usually fairly predictability. The bumps in his not so yellow brick road seem contrived for the plot rather than to really showcase the ghastliness and loneliness of grief. On that front, Sciorra delivers quite potently for a time; as the story develops it gives Gooding a little more to get his teeth into, and von Sydow has his “Seventh Seal” (1957) to draw from - which he does with a scene-stealing integrity. Mainly, though, it is a showcase for the star to show he is not just about comedy. He can clearly tackle more substantial issues and at no point throughout didn’t ever feel like laughing. Sadly, though, I didn’t ever feel like crying either. For a film that is all about the essence of what makes us people, it’s remarkably soul-less.

It was a moving, visually stunning masterpiece unlike anything I'd ever seen before. Even though I knew how it was going to end, I kept cheering for it to happen. An absolutely beautiful film. Chris (Robin Williams) and Annie (Annabella Sciorra) are husband and wife. They met by chance and fell in love immediately. They have two wonderful kids and a marriage full of love and life. But tragically, one day their kids are taken from them in a car accident. They fight to continue their lives, but one day, four years later, Chris's life is also taken. He ends up in Heaven, but can't accept his fate. A guide is sent to him, in the form of his friend Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.). Albert leads Chris on a journey through Heaven, and the wonders it can bring. In the real world, Annie can't handle Chris's death, and she kills herself and ends up in Hell. Chris must go on a journey to find her, and save her from an eternity of sorrow. This movie hits all the right chords. It makes you laugh at times, and makes you cry at times. The love Chris has for Annie is stronger than anything you have ever seen. He's willing to lose his mind, and spend all eternity in Hell with her, with neither of them recognizing the other, because they are soul mates, destined to be together for all time. This movie is hard to explain in any other way. The journey Chris goes through is remarkable, but the real star of this film is the visuals. When Chris goes to Heaven, he is told that what he sees is what his mind can create. So what he sees is himself inside Annie's paintings. He lives in a Heaven full of brilliant colors. Life in a painting. It was amazing to look at. And the colors of the movie, along with the set designs were incredible. His house, Annie's Hell, the sea of Faces. I just couldn't believe how fantastic everything looked in this movie. The performances were wonderful. Robin Williams was at his dramatic best, and Cuba Gooding Jr. brought energy to the film. The story was strong, if predictable, and the manner is which it was made (utilizing flashbacks) was powerful. You really felt the characters emotions throughout. I know this review is weak, but I really don't know what else to say. I guess you're going to have to see for yourself. It doesn't matter if you don't believe in a Heaven or a Hell. What Dreams May Come will make you believe in something even more powerful than that. Love, and what one man will do because of it.
