They Shall Not Grow Old is not a documentary—it is a resurrection. Peter Jackson does not reinterpret the Great War; he exhumes it gently, cleans the bones, and lets the dead speak for themselves. And that restraint matters. The restored footage is unnerving in the best way. Faces move. Eyes blink. Men laugh before they are fed into the mud. Color does not beautify them—it humanizes them, and that is far more disturbing. These soldiers stop being myth, stop being history, and become boys who did not know what awaited them. I approve of this honesty. There is no swelling score begging for tears, no narrator telling you how to feel. The horror is allowed to exist plainly. Casual, bureaucratic, absurd. War is not framed as glory or tragedy—it is shown as machinery that consumes youth efficiently and without malice. That quiet cruelty is the truth. This is how memory should be handled: with respect, restraint, and a refusal to look away.
