A war film infused with western and grindhouse elements that's worth a watch.

I recently watched Scavengers (1969) on Tubi. The storyline follows a town run by Confederate loyalists whose soldiers refuse to accept that the Civil War is over and continue conducting business as usual. When a group of newly freed slaves arrives in town, tensions erupt and a violent riot ensues. The film is directed by Lee Frost (Chain Gang Women) and stars John Bliss (Intolerable Cruelty), Bruce Kimball (Drive-In Massacre), and Uschi Digard (Supervixen). This is primarily a war film with strong western and grindhouse elements. The attire, settings, props, and overall premise feel grounded and authentic. The acting is serviceable, and the cast includes some gorgeous ladies -Uschi Digard among them. At times, the film is sad and frustrating to watch, largely because the events depicted are rooted in real history. There are also more rape scenes than I expected. That said, the final showdown and its outcome make the journey worthwhile. In conclusion, Scavengers is a war film infused with western and grindhouse elements that's worth a watch. I'd rate it a 6/10.

Not enough nudity or violence.

The video box called this crapsterpiece "a stark naked picture that leaves its guts hanging out!" and went on to say "The Scavengers were rotten to the core - thoroughly disgusting and had a serious sexual problem...you'll probably love them." Well, the nudity is so incompetently filmed that most of the time it's nigh impossible to fully gather what's going on. Unfortunate, since most of the women are absolutely gorgeous with heaving (natural) breasts worthy of Russ Meyer (well one of them is the incomparable Uschi Digard). The action scenes are OK, but there's not enough of them. The editor on the film was Paul Hunt which makes the shootouts that much more of a disappointment. And no, the slow motion in this film isn't fit to lick the cow plop off of Sam Peckinpah's boots. The plot is somewhat involving, with some interesting touches and character motivations, but the film doesn't have enough talent behind it to be good art, and doesn't have enough sleaze to be good exploitation.
