I always love a good Guy Maddin film

I always love a good Guy Maddin film, and this one was no exception. The Saddest Music in the World was a delightfully absurd film that's guaranteed to entertain. This picture is full of Maddin's signatures, surreal imagery, old filmmaking techniques, and his offbeat humor. The visuals are stunning, even though it's not the highest quality, Maddin still creates beautiful set pieces and spectacles. And the music in this picture is just as delightful. With this film, Maddin proves himself to be one of the most unique contemporary directors out there.

During The Great Depression, a Canadian beer baroness

During The Great Depression, a Canadian beer baroness (Isabella Rossellini) sponsors a competition to find the most sorrowful music in the world. A man builds prosthetic legs full of beer. I've learned over the years I have an inclination to enjoy expressionistic films and Maddin is a modern voice for the art form. This film is just odd and full of dreamlike absurdity. Like all of his films (that I've seen) it's very stylized with 20s/30s inspired cinematography. Indeed, I felt as if I were viewing a silent film that had been dubbed separately. Just visually stunning. I would love it if this type of competition actually existed. Does it?
