Plot summary

Drop out of school to ride with the Merry Pranksters. Form America’s most enduring jam band. Become a family man and father. Never stop chasing the muse. Bob Weir took his own path to and through superstardom as rhythm guitarist for The Grateful Dead. Mike Fleiss re-imagines the whole wild journey in this magnetic rock doc and concert film, with memorable input from bandmates, contemporaries, followers, family, and, of course, the inimitable Bob Weir himself.

Your enjoyment of The Other One: The Long

Your enjoyment of The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir will very much depend on your knowledge of and relationship to The Grateful Dead. For hardcore Deadheads, the documentary will be a piece of touching nostalgia with plenty of reminders of the glory of past days and the special relationship that Weir had with his bandmate Jerry Garcia. For those with a casual interest in the band, The Other One will serve as an educational tool as the film traces the early days of the Dead in San Francisco in the tumultuous ‘60s and their impact on both the culture and the music of the times. For the uninitiated, it'll be a bit of a trip and more than a little puzzling at times. Either way, it's an insightful look at the life of an enigmatic talent, but, much like a Dead concert, you're left at the end wanting more.

Not too much romanticizing the times, not too many hippy dippy claims of enlightenment or tying some meaning to a 'cosmic coincidence', meahn. But also not a lot of new information aside from very personal family stuff. I'd like to have heard more about writing songs and making some of the albums, but it's pretty good. 3.4 stars

Good, but a bit flat

The life and times of Bob Weir, Grateful Dead guitarist and vocalist.Good, but a bit flat. Covers the history of Bob Weir well, especially the Grateful Dead years (as you would hope). Reasonably interesting interviews with Weir and other people. Quite emotional too at times. However, doesn't ever elevate beyond interesting. There's no spark, or something revolutionary in the story-telling, to make this brilliant.
