Plot summary

An abused battered wife has had enough of husband beating up on her. Everywhere she turns for help, there's not much anyone will do. After he rapes her one night, she sets the bed on fire with him in it asleep.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. I couldn't tell you how many times that I've seen this movie in my life. I watch it any time that I can. I wished that I could find it on DVD to buy. I grew up in a abusive home, where my dad was an alcoholic and extremely abusive to my mom. (He was a Vietnam vet and suffered from untreated PTSD...he was a POW twice and received the purple heart) And this is the first & really the only movie I've seen that hits so close to home about what it's like to grow up in a situation like that..and what it's like to be an abused wife. I know what my mom went through and this movie is so accurate it's not funny. The actors and actresses did an amazing job at playing the characters and hitting their marks. The writer of this movie did an amazing job and so did the producer. I think all the main stars, the writer, and producer should have (if they didn't) received some kind of rewards/trophy's, recognition for this movie.

The bed burns at one point or another in a marriage Based on the 1980 novel by Faith McNaulty starring the late Farrah Fawcett and Paul Lee Mat Mickey and Francine Hughes met in 1964 and fell in love After they moved into a new house in Dansville, Michigan things start to change Mickey becomes aggressively more abusive and violent towards Francine The more it happens the more ignored it is by her husbands relatives and Francine has to build up the courage to defend herself and protect her kids 13 years later Francine sets fire to her husbands bed in 1977 in order to escape resulting in his death The entirety of the film is told via flashback from Francine while she’s being interrogated by the police The last half of the film is a giant courtroom drama recounting the events that lead up to this woman finally striking back at her husband For a woman is it better to stand by her spouse no matter what?, do you have to stay stuck in a violent relationship?, there’s a lot of toxicity and gaslighting some are not fully aware of, should a parent let alone the abuser be entitled to see his kids even in a divorce? This is very hard to watch at times and scary given the subject matter Domestic violence is unfortunately still an ongoing problem today Some of the music in this could be scaled back a bit and the ending could use more than just a freeze frame describing the aftermath Yet this is a powerful story of a woman trying at every turn to escape her tormentor not only for herself but for her kids Nobody can just sit back and continue to suffer the pain the story has to change
