Plot summary

Bud Clay races motorcycles in the 250cc Formula II class of road racing. After a race in New Hampshire, he has five days to get to his next race in California. During his road trip, he is haunted by memories of the last time he saw Daisy, his true love.

My theory is that Vincent Gallo paid himself

My theory is that Vincent Gallo paid himself a fortune out of the budget, so the only thing he could film is him driving a car for 90 minutes. Then he used the rest of the money to pay Chloe Sevigny to give him real head twice. A truly bad person.

We all have some movies we love, despite knowing very well they are indefensible and fundamentally bad. I do love this move but it is not one of these. I wouldn't give 5 star because it is a late 20th century movie like Virgin Suicide or Gummo, but unlike it, it’s impossible to fully appreciate its quality 20+ yrs later, & certainly hard to even at all go past the distasteful aspects: not only the last scene, but generally, the uneasy feeling of never being sure if, as audience you’re not yourself being taken for a ride. But to put it back in context: in the late 90s, it’s a very common artistic posture. Having that in mind: It is visually beautiful, the soundtrack is amazing, it is abstract and hypnotic, but has enough story for your imagination to constantly try to fill the gaps. And above everything, the confusion between Gallo himself and his character, how pathetic it makes Gallo appear is exactly what the point is. It is not where the movie fails, it is where it succeeds.

A subtle masterpiece of grief and loneliness. A Vincent Gallo Picture, doing what he does best. Making uniquely artistic films like no one else anywhere. I love this film! I highly recommend. 97/100
