The Astronaut" is a somewhat predictable but nonetheless

"The Astronaut" is a somewhat predictable but nonetheless entertaining, sci fi, horror thriller. Its our personal perception of reality and threat that this film subverts and finally turns on its head, that makes it work. What we think of as familiar and alien, as safe and unsafe, are not what they appear to be. Its these core concepts that this film plays with, developing a story that's creepy, atmospheric and psychologically unsettling. On the downside, for veteran viewers, the story may be a little predictable. I'd worked out what was happening about two thirds of the way through. That said, newcomers, with a fresh set of eyes, may still enjoy the final "reveal". In summary, whilst not overly original what "The Astronaut" offers up is a sense of displaced reality, and threat, that's quite compelling. Worth a look.

Well, well....

As soon as I saw Fishburne I knew it was going in a certain direction. He has an uncanny way of appearing in some real questionable films. He´s a great actor but somehow he picks the wrong movies. Kate Mara is also a real good actor who delivered in this production acting-wise. The big problem is the script and the premises. I really wanted to like this production cause it´s family focused and has no gore or bad language. I do think perhaps it´s aimed at a younger demography than what they aimed for. It fits very well for a friday viewing for wife and kids back in the sofa on friday with popcorn and some soft drinks, everyone else should perhaps give it a pass.

I admire the makers' commitment to the film's sound and production design. That made me buy into the first two acts, especially the tense middle section. It, in fact, made me contemplate a different version of Cloverfield, but some aspects were still amiss. However, the final act is a total bummer. Yes, the twist might be unexpected, and on paper, it sounds like a really interesting idea. Yet what we see unfold on screen is surely lacklustre. The film also shows a NASA astronaut (who has just returned from an expedition in space) looking up conspiracy theory websites about UFOs (..are you being serious right now?). It's almost as if a filmmaker is obsessively using Reddit to improve their filmmaking. From that moment on, the storytelling lost its grip on me. Until then, I was moderately enjoying it as a chamber horror flick with psychological thriller undertones. Kate Mara is always a dependable performer, and she doesn't disappoint.
