Plot summary

High-school principal Dr. Alfred Carroll relates to an audience of parents that marijuana can have devastating effects on teens: a drug supplier entices several restless teens, Mary and Jimmy Lane, sister and brother, and Bill, Mary's boyfriend, into frequenting a reefer house. Gradually, Bill and Jimmy are drawn into smoking dope, which affects their family lives.

Reefer Madness (1938) is a 65-minute-long US drama

Reefer Madness (1938) is a 65-minute-long US drama I saw on Plex in June 2026. Propaganda. Poorly dramatized propaganda against marijuana. Potentially deliberately misleading propaganda against marijuana. Begins as a fictional lecture to parents then flashbacks to dramatisation. I felt the intent to protect people from death and crimes ok however they presented marijuana as worse than heroin and yet the actors looked like they were on meth, and drive like it too. The acting, sets, cinematography, editing… are all poor, well beneath melodrama. The director lacks self-awareness because they use a hallucination trope… in a scene where the character is sober (it was an artistic use). The lower-teeth mouth of Dr Carrol is unnerving. One thing stood out: the reefer pianist in the club – reminded me of Michael Richard’s Kramer from Seinfeld. Rewatch? No. Recommend? No. 1/10.

Very entertaining as a historical drama of anti-cannabis

Very entertaining as a historical drama of anti-cannabis paranoid propaganda. The acting and writing are so over the top hilarious that the film undercuts it's intended cautionary message by portraying the prohibitionists as befuddled clueless dopes. Even better if you smoke one before watching.
