Plot summary

After experiencing a traumatic event in Igloolik (an Inuit hamlet in Foxe Basin, Qikiqtaaluk Region in Nunavut), Uyarak leaves her community and family in Nunavut to live in Montréal. When Covid-19 lockdowns close off the Canadian Arctic from the rest of the world, Uyarak is further separated from her closest friend, eldest sister, Saqpinak. This extreme situation blurs the lines of both the fictional lives of the sisters, and the non-fiction lives of the film’s directors, Lucy Tulugarjuk and Carol Kunnuk, who play the sisters.

It had potential...

Needless to say that I had, of course, never even heard about this 2023 drama titled "Tautuktavuk", as I stumbled upon it by random chance here in 2026. And given the fact that it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to check it out.I have to say that the fact that the movie was written by, directed by and starring Carol Kunnuk and Lucy Tulugarjuk was something that initially spoke against the movie for me, as I am not a fan of movies that have one or more people fill out these roles. Such movies usually tend to be questionable affairs.Writers Carol Kunnuk, Lucy Tulugarjuk, Samuel Cohn-Cousineau, Norman Cohn and Gillian Robinson put together a script that certainly deals with some pretty heavy topics. Though the dialogue was a bit of a swing and a miss, as it felt forced and unnatural. It just didn't come off as being natural dialogue that people would talk in such informative manners about. However, it does offer a heartfelt and raw insight into the culture and tragedies of the Innuit people. With "Tautuktavuk" being my first Innuit movie, of course I was not familiar with a single actress or actor on the cast list. The acting performances were fair, though most of the dialogue felt forced, scripted and unnatural.I found the movie to fall short of adequately entertaining me, as it was monotonous and slow paced, and the rigid dialogue certainly didn't help win me over. However, I will say that you should give the movie a fair chance, if you enjoy indigenous dramas dealing with real life problems and issues. However, it is not a movie that I will be watching a second time.My rating of directors Carol Kunnuk and Lucy Tulugarjuk's 2023 drama "Tautuktavuk" lands on a four out of ten stars.
