Plot summary

I fell in love with this movie as

I fell in love with this movie as a teenager seeing it on TV. IMHO, S.S.S. is *the* textbook example of an intense early 60s genre "art film" (complete with the audio background of the constant bang-bang-bang of the oil field pump) with suspenseful pacing, impeccable photography and some stellar performances on the parts of Ian Bannen (especially) and Van Eyck. I'm sure Baker was meant to be the major "draw" but her performance is, of course, eclipsed by the parameters of the part and her own somewhat limited talents. The comedic subplot of a letter-from-home-starved Bannen buying a piece of one of the other worker's mail is brilliant. This isn't a "cult classic" but it absolutely *should* be. One of the only films I know of during that time period that was a truly cooperative venture between three different countries and rightly nominated for a British film award.

Relatively obscure little gem that focuses on how

Relatively obscure little gem that focuses on how a team of oil station workers have their isolated life routine literally crashed into by an alluring woman and her ex-husband. While distributors of Station Six-Sahara wanted to capitalize on Carroll Baker's emerging sexpot persona, the real draw here is the script by Brian Clemens and Bryan Forbes. Clever and insightful, the film works more as a character study of male group dynamics and individual eccentricities than erotic potboiler. Denholm Elliott and Ian Bannen are great as almost proto versions of Winchester and Hawkeye.
