Plot summary

Gengobe Satsuma, an exiled samurai cast out as an Asano clan retainer, is given a second chance to join his brothers in arms to become the 48th Ronin against the Shogunate. His faithful servant gathers the 100 ryo required for his acceptance. Gengobe is also in love with a greedy geisha named Koman. About to be sold to another man, Gengobe learns that in order to keep her, her debt is exactly 100 ryo.

For those who love Japanese cinema, today I want to tell the story of Gengobe, a high-ranking samurai from the Edo era, who is in love with a beautiful Geisha named Koman, and who has spent practically his entire fortune trying to "seduce" her. Under the blinding effects of this artificial passion, he is mercilessly deceived by her and her henchmen, who, without his realizing it, steal the little money he had left, leading him to ruin and loss of his prestige. This causes him to descend into Shura-do, or the realm of the asura, dominated by the conflict of beings, plunging him into an endless cycle of madness, violence, and confusion. He unsuccessfully confronts his Yōkai until he self-destructs his kanji and loses himself in his own psyche, ruled by his sword. Toshio Matsumoto (Funeral Parade of Roses, 1968) takes us by the hand through the psyche of a once great warrior, who travels this cyclical path of perdition immersed in violence and spiritual self-destruction. This is achieved through a sublime, highly contrasted and claustrophobic visual style, captured by Tatsuo Susuki's cameras and lighting. He portrays, like Noh theater, part of Buddhist philosophy in a dreamlike style reminiscent of German Expressionism (Nosferatu, 1922), but applied to Japanese folklore. So, if you want to celebrate the wonderful month of October with some fancy horror cinema, check out this film, which is free on YouTube.
