This film franchise has quite a reputation for

This film franchise has quite a reputation for itself, being marked as the inspiration for so many "tough guy- little kid" combos. So, I figured I would go see the source for all those projects, and it was a bit of a letdown. First off, the film feels incomplete, both in story and production. There are long stretches of silence, with no ambient noise, music or anything. In general, the sound design does not sync up well. And the story feels like it is the pilot episode for a T.V. series as opposed to a film, with dangling plot threads and a heavy focus on a side-quest. It is like the TV show "Kung Fu" but if it was allowed to be super violent and show nudity.

As an avid fan of Japanese samurai movies

As an avid fan of Japanese samurai movies, tv shows, and literature, I can say that the early Lone Wolf and Cub movies are at the apogee of the genre. Tomisaburo Wakayama provides an outstanding performance as the stoic and taciturn ronin Ogami Ittō, who nonetheless manages to convey moments of great valence and emotional depth. As well, Wakayama, a fourth dan judoka, displays excellent swordsmanship during the thoroughly enjoyable fight scenes. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

It was okay. Has the typical samurai sword fights and plot. Made over half a century ago, the cinematography was done really well even by today's standard. Fight scenes are ultra violent.
