Having read the book by Clive Cussler I

Having read the book by Clive Cussler I had high hopes for this film as the book was excellent. They filmed the sinking of the Titanic but cut it from the film why I don't know??? One of the main characters in the book wasn't even mentioned in the film Dirk Pitt's friend and partner Guiordino. The premise of the story is excellent, needing a ore to power a missile defence system which would cover the USA, which was being transported from Great Britain to the United States on the Titanic.... So the only way to retrieve the it, is to raise it. The special effects are superb as is John Barry's score, when Pitt walks through the ship to put the White Star flag on the stern its quite moving. As is when the Titanic reaches New York. Some of the dialogue is awful...put the wormy on the hookey.....! The underwater scenes are well done and the Russian subplot are all from the book. Richard Jordan a fine actor is miscast in this,not my idea of Dirk Pitt. Alex Guinness is good as is Jason Robards, overall a good film of an excellent book. Just ignore some of the dialogue and enjoy!

As soon as I saw the name of

As soon as I saw the name of no-talent hack "Jason Robards" in the opening credits I knew this would be a stinker. Running time is 1:53 but don't waste that much time on it; the pacing is so s-l-o-w you can set playback time at 1.25x to speed the super-hokey exposition up, and there's lots you can jump past during the search. The premise is laughable but I'll give it some credit for the model work and special effects which aren't at all bad for the pre-CGI era. There are time anachronisms - Alec Guinness looks 60-ish here but his character would have to have been more than two decades older than that - 85 or 90 - to have been a crewman aboard the doomed ship. There just isn't much at all here to hold your attention; the producers probably figured that the set piece of the ship coming to the surface was worth the price of admission. Spoiler Alert: It isn't!
