1900 was made when the communist interpretation of Fascism was losing its persuasiveness. Now we know that Fascism had a consensus, with hardly any anti-Fascist activity until the final 6 months of the regime. What caused the rise of Fascism was the socialist harassment of veterans returning from the First World War, and socialists seizing factories, as well as land from peasants and business owners. They were spit upon, and assaulted for fighting in what socialists called "the Capitalists war"--even though most socialists in Europe had opted to support their native homelands in the conflict--with the notable exception of Russian and Italian socialists. After the economic catastrophe in Lenin's Russia, who can blame the Fascist "cross-class" influence to defend "agrarian" Italy from unripe socialism that was supposed to inherit mature capitalism? Fascism was a developmental socialism for agrarian nations that didn't have the prerequisites that Marx required. Private property was a revokable privilege rather than a natural born right. Bolshevik collectivism and liberal individualism were viewed as "reactionary" for undermining the collective production of the community.

This film is one of the best ever. But to really understand it, one should be aware of the actual context of time and place first.
