Plot summary

When Marvin Hamlisch passed away in August 2012 the worlds of music, theatre and cinema lost a talent the likes of which we may never see again. Seemingly destined for greatness, Hamlisch was accepted into New York’s Juilliard School as a 6-year-old musical prodigy and rapidly developed into a phenomenon. With instantly classic hits ‘The Way We Were’ and ‘Nobody Does It Better’ and scores for Hollywood films such as The Swimmer, The Sting and Sophie’s Choice and the Broadway juggernaut A Chorus Line; Hamlisch became the go-to composer for film and Broadway producers and a prominent presence on the international Concert Hall circuit. His streak was staggering, vast, unprecedented and glorious, by the age of 31 Hamlisch had won 4 Grammys, an Emmy, 3 Oscars, a Tony and a Pulitzer prize: success that burned so bright, it proved impossible to match.

Excellent presentation of a great person and career

Excellent presentation of a great person and career; I especially enjoyed Kevin Cole's piano playing at the beginning and his comments along with all the luminaries quoted in the film.

You may watch this for the music but

You may watch this for the music but you will finish having felt fortunate to know the man better. Certainly a prolific artist. What is much more incredible is his simple love of people, his generosity and the amazing love story between him and his wife - proposing without having even seen his future wife based on the same heartfelt intuition that drove his compositions. There are so many awards and no shortage of documentaries about artists and their accomplishments. This is a winner; an artist and a human being. A wonderful film by Dori Berinstein that I didn't want to end. From "The Way We Were" to the score of "Sophie's Choice", "A Chorus Line" and "Behind the Candelabre" nothing is better than having insight into the man himself.
