Plot summary

In 2008, after a show celebrating the 20th anniversary of his fashion house, Maison Margiela, visionary designer Martin Margiela left the fashion world for good. Throughout his career, the Belgian designer remained anonymous, refusing interviews and never being photographed, leading some to call him the fashion world’s answer to Banksy. Now, more than a decade after his departure, Margiela digs into his meticulous and idiosyncratic personal archives to reflect on his revolutionary career and legacy.

I am always irritated when shows about fashion

I am always irritated when shows about fashion show the models' faces and not the clothes of the designer. This documentary does the same. While we see tight shots of sections of a piece of the garment we rarely see the completed outfit as a whole.

an excellent t fashion designer documentary

Having Matgiela be the owner of the narrative through his voice is key to understanding the essence of his creation and the forces that drove him. His story can be highly inspiring for anyone, because it shows the power that resides in the persistent pursuit of what really matters to us. The creations are shown both during fashion shows and on display, oftentimes from very close. The documentary also gives insight into very personal materials which margiela shows and comments himself. A very powerful film.
