How did this movie get such high reviews

How did this movie get such high reviews? It was painfully boring, interspersed with moments that were painfully embarrassing to watch. Nick was just an awful human being, no way that many attractive women would've put up with his shit, only his poor suffering girlfriend was somewhat likable and interesting. Andi MacDowel was great but she deserved better material than this and seeing her deal with her awful family was just tiresome, and ultimately the storyline didn't go anywhere. In the end, the entire movie just seemed...pointless.

Been meaning to get to this one for

Been meaning to get to this one for a while, and it did not disappoint. Writer/director Russell Harbaugh, and his co-writer Eric Mendelsohn, did fine work in creating multi-dimensional characters in a very authentic, relatable word who are experiencing some extreme relationship changes within their family. Themes of dealing w/ tragic loss, infidelity, familial dynamics, and lack of taking responsibility for selfish acts are all deal with realistically and with real depth. There's elements of Bergman, Altman, and Riechardt's work in the movie. The acting throughout is strong as well. McDowell, O'Dowd, and Adomain are esp. good. O'Dowd nails the self-serving adulterous guy who deals with his own issues by attacking others. Adomain is the sad sack who hasn't found a sense of purpose that will bring him the sense of self-worth he needs. And McDowell's matriarch trying to keep it together after losing her husband and 'her boys' father is convincing to the end. Great support work as well. Credit also to the editing work and the musical score that hits the right notes that fit the tone. Recommended- 3.8 stars
