There are three threads to this drama, but sadly none of them are really very engaging as it veers away from what could have been quite an intriguing fantasy and heads more into melodrama territory. Firstly, we have “Jeanne” (Clara Pacini). An upset orphan, she has only recently fled her home and just happens to stumble upon a film production of “The Snow Queen” that is being headlined by the temperamental “Cristina” (Marion Cotillard). Now “Cristina” is not a woman with her problems to seek either, and with the third strand illustrating just how the film is being made, we are presented with a slow, dimly lit and really quite lacklustre combination of themes that never quite sparkles. To be fair to Cotillard, she does exude a certain frostiness that the photography does well to support, but as the two women’s characters start to intertwine more, that darkness, eeriness and coldness becomes subsumed in something altogether more tame. I’m sure one of it’s purposes is to blur the realities for both women - and thereby for us, too, and as it progresses we see the fascinated young “Jeanne/Bianca" become even more immersed in a fairy story than we know she was when she first arrived, but I didn’t feel there to be very much substance or electricity in their rapidly arrived at relationship. The film is atmospheric but that’s not really anything to do with either of them either, nor their sparsely delivered dialogue. For me, it was because I already knew how unforgiving and demanding Anderson’s original “Snow Queen” was and so Cotillard needn’t do so much of her own heavy lifting. I don’t know, perhaps I just wasn’t in the mood, but I was really quite disappointed with this.

"Who Loves Her Must Be Willing to Sacrifice"

"The Ice Tower" is a film that doesn't just tell the tale of the Snow Queen it lives it. Lucile Hadzihalilovic creates something fascinating here: The line between role and reality blurs until you no longer know where one ends and the other begins.The setting is dark and grim outstandingly executed. The visual design fits the film's mood perfectly. You feel the cold, the fascination, the danger. The pacing is deliberately slow, but that's exactly what makes the film more atmospheric. It doesn't rush, it lets you immerse yourself.Marion Cotillard as Cristina embodies the cold, fascinating Snow Queen perfectly. "Who loves her must be willing to sacrifice themselves literally" - this sentence describes not only her role in the film within a film, but becomes reality. Cotillard doesn't simply play an actress playing the Snow Queen. She IS the Snow Queen. The role she embodies on screen, she lives outside of it. It's as if she transferred the piece she performs into her own life.Jeanne, played by Clara Pacini, is drawn into this spell just like in the fairy tale. She's held captive, not by force, but by fascination. She sacrifices herself because she believes this closeness to the Snow Queen is worth it. The parallels to the fairy tale aren't subtle, they're direct and that's exactly what works. The film uses the fairy tale as a mirror and both levels reinforce each other.The two main characters work. Their dynamic makes sense, their relationship is toxic and fascinating at the same time. The film shows what obsession looks like without romanticizing it."The Ice Tower" is atmospherically strong, visually impressive, and clever in the way it merges fairy tale and reality. A dark, fascinating experience.

Reality and fantasy melt into each other

A runaway orphan called Jeanne hides out at a film studio where a production of the fairy tale 'The Snow Queen' is being made, and falls under the spell of Cristina, the actress who is playing 'The Snow Queen'. There is of course rather more to director Lucile Hadzihalilovic's art house feature film than that. Released in 2025 Hadzihalilovic's film has like her previous films certain autobiographical elements (at least at the emotional and symbolic level), in a film which borrows images from her previous films (ie 'Innocence'), where she manages to slip in a poster for one of her favourite films 'The Red Shoes' (which this film has elements of), and where the two main characters seem in certain respects to mirror each other (they are in their own different ways lonely, searching and marginalised). It's a symbolic film where reality, fantasy, dreams, artifice and imaginings meld into a tale of the dangers of distorted perceptions and perspectives, the confusing of identities, the seduction of stardom and stars, and the shattering of illusions. Cristina reminds you of Delphine Seyrig in 'Daughters of Darkness' (another of Hadzihalilovic's favourite films).
