This drama, which imagines the form that fascism

This drama, which imagines the form that fascism might have taken during a period when fascism was dominating Europe, is thought provoking at a time when the accusations of fascism dominate our current political discourse. After watching it with from an analytical perspective and ignoring the underlying romantic tension between Hepburn and Tracy, the viewer can consider whether or not our current political climate really does foreshadow 20th century fascism or is just a continuation of the same political corruption that has been endemic to one degree or another in US politics since its inception.

3.5 stars; A 'non-romantic comedy' Tracy/Hepburn movie that could be considered a pre-WWII political film. Who would have thought? Tracy plays a reporter of the old-school variety, out to get a story rather than an opinion piece (a lost art). Hepburn plays the widow of an American hero who died in a car wreck under suspicious circumstances. Tracy wants to get to the bottom of the mystery of the hero's death. So he persues Hepburn. What he finds is a much bigger story and a warning to America about the dark forces overseas and their plot to gain power in America. The plot is still fresh today. The film is somewhat dark, and I don't mean the lighting. Tracy and Hepburn do credible performances based on that the roles wereg complete opposites of their usual fare.
