Plot summary

The life story of a salt-of-the-earth Irish immigrant, who becomes an Army Noncommissioned Officer and spends his 50 year career at the United States Military Academy at West Point. This includes his job-related experiences as well as his family life and the relationships he develops with young cadets with whom he befriends. Based on the life of a real person.

One of Ford's least interesting works. It suffers from the typical biopic problems and a lot of the humor feels like a cheap knockoff of better material from "The Quiet Man".

I consider myself a big fan of John

I consider myself a big fan of John Ford’s films, but unfortunately, this one feels a bit disappointing. It has all the typical “Ford ingredients,” yet somehow, it doesn’t quite work as well as his other films. The humor feels dated—understandable, given it’s from the mid-‘50s—but it still detracts from the experience. I’ll give it another chance, but it’s clear that this won’t become one of my favorites.
