Plot summary

Nick, a gay, HIV-positive architect, begins to display severe symptoms of AIDS and makes preparations to kill himself before he is unable to function normally. He arranges a party to reconnect and say goodbye to his closest friends and his confused parents. But when his ex-partner, Brandon, a television director who left Nick when he was diagnosed with HIV, shows up, what was supposed to be a celebratory event becomes much more difficult for everyone.

Very sadly forgotten character piece about dealing with

Very sadly forgotten character piece about dealing with AIDS and how it affects everyone who knows a victim of it. The director's lover died the same way the main character did so he made it a passion project and it shows in spades thru the entire film. Very well cast: you get Eric Roberts in his best role besides Runaway Train, you get great performances from Lee Grant, George Segal, Gregory Harrison, Bruce Davison, and Marlee Matlin, you get some solid laughs from Bronson Pinchot and Roddy McDowell, and you get a nice performance from an against her type Margaret Cho. Everyone's great here especially Pinchot and Roberts who imo make the movie work. Pinchot's the comic relief but his final scene was quite sad easily one of his more leveled roles. Robert's family is all well picked especially Matlin who holds her own as the main figure of the family in terms of attention. Grant and especially Segal are just there but Marlee commands the screen. Harrison gives a very layered role as he starts off very unlikeable yet you grow to understand his actions and by the end he has a very Denzel in Philadelphia like spiritual turnaround which is very natural. This is Roberts's movie though make no mistake. In an era where his sister dominated this movie showed the kind of talent he truly had. It's a shame no one much noticed it. Very much recomend this movie; it's as sardonically funny as it is tragic, but it's one the best films on the subject of AIDS. The victim is treated like a human as is everyone else. It's everything I hoped Longtime Companion was but never got. Wish this would get a blu ray release at some point it very much deserves it.
