Plot summary

If you listen to 1970s pop music, you’ve undoubtedly heard these guys play, but do you know their names? This documentary highlights five talented men—Danny, Leland, Rus, Waddy, and Steve— who shunned the spotlight for themselves yet enjoyed decades of success as session musicians on iconic tracks. Interviewees include their collaborators James Taylor, Don Henley, Lyle Lovett, Jackson Browne, Phil Collins, Carole King, Stevie Nicks, Keith Richards, Steve Jordan, and dozens more who take us behind the scenes on the songs that shaped an era.

Brilliant film about a band of brothers, their story that created the music of the 70’s and an all star cast that Denny Tedesco once again (The Wrecking Crew movie) has woven into a funny and emotional ride that you won’t want to miss!

If you liked Denny Tedesco's previous film about the legendary session musicians in The Wrecking Crew, you'll enjoy this continued look at the musicians behind some of the biggest songs of all time. Whereas the members of The Wrecking Crew came into prominence in the 1960s, the four core members of The Immediate Family started to see their musical influence take shape in the early 1970s with the rise of singer-songwriters. One of my favorite parts of this film comes from Waddy Wachtel. Discussing the origins of his iconic guitar part in the Stevie Nicks song "Edge Of Seventeen," Wachtel remarks that had he known he'd have to play the same note over and over again in a live setting (sometimes as long as six minutes), he may have approached things differently. If you like to hear stories about how some of your favorite songs were written and recorded, this film allows room for each member (Danny Kortchmar — guitar; Russ Kunkel — drums; Waddy Wachtel — guitar; and Leland Sklar — bass) to reflect on their contributions in the music business with great detail. I appreciate that Tedesco continues to shine a light on these talented musicians and showcase their influence in the history of popular music. This film allows us to see their passion and appreciation for creating great music and doing so without the fanfare that regularly accompanied the artists they worked with, including Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, and Linda Ronstadt.

These are the guys who's names haunt the

These are the guys who's names haunt the 70s albums in my collection. Nice to see them up close and personal. Talented technicians they may be but it's the mavericks who are truly interesting. These guys are solid gold, but it's the people at the front who create the real magic.
