Plot summary

Part jazz history, part true-crime tale, Kasper Collin’s new documentary employs extensive archival footage and new interviews to tell the tragic story of the magnificently talented trumpeter Lee Morgan and his common-law wife Helen, who murdered him in a New York bar in 1972.

A very well-made film. Packing a story this

A very well-made film. Packing a story this complicated into ninety minutes is no easy task, and while it left me wanting to know more about Lee Morgan and the people around him, that’s probably a testament to how compelling the documentary is rather than a criticism. It approaches the story with remarkable grace and restraint, allowing viewers to see both the beauty and the self-destructive impulses that defined Lee Morgan’s life and genius. In a different way, the same could probably be said for Helen Morgan. A fascinating and emotionally impactful look at one of jazz’s most brilliant and complicated figures.

I CALLED HIM MORGAN is a unique documentary about one of the greatest periods in jazz history, and some of the greatest players. The story of Lee Morgan's life, relationship with his wife, and tragic death provides focus, richness and depth, and the film is spaciousness enough to hold its subjects without unnecessary drama or sensationalism. The narrative perspective is unusual, and while the film can be somber at times, it is also sensitive and very human, highlighting essential qualities of the music these people and this period produced.
