I think this is a fine dark comedy about isolation, the inability to comunicate with others, hypocrisy, lack of empathy, etc. The tone of the film shifts from comic to tragic in quite an abrupt way that reflects the psychological breakdown of the character. The film's perspective I think goes from empathy to cynicism in the same way the character does. I don't think the movie is indulging towards big media personalities. Rather the contrary: we see France suffering but we also see her being an insensitive and cynical person, we see the wealth and privilege that makes her own problems not only irrelevant but also part of bigger social problems. As the film develops the humor sometimes is there to make the atmosphere way darker, but since is still humour I found myself laughing at things that are actually quite tragic and painful, in the same way France herself does. The combination between comedy and tragedy in this film is pretty rough around the edges and that will definitely not suit well with some audiences but I liked it.
@DrWEst You really shouldn't make posts which show how a movie was too intelligent for you to understand it.
I am french, I love all kind of movies from all parts of the world, BUT with one exception: modern french cinema. I just can't stand 90% of it, and this film sums up perfectly why: pretentious, empty, flashy, contemptuous and preachy... De la merde. :-)
