Plot summary

The true story of the Emerson family and the tumult that followed the success of their self-recorded pop-funk album of the same name, which went largely unnoticed until critics rediscovered and reappraised it decades later. Now, as an adult, Donnie is forced to confront the ghosts from the past and grapple with the emotional toll his dreams have taken on the family who supported him.

Great premise and cast but poor execution overall

Great premise and cast but poor execution overall. Affleck’s character is so wrapped up in an overindulgence of trauma that it renders his character unlikable. The use of flashbacks becomes so tiresome they eventually become laughable. To top it all off, the music isn’s anything to write home about- its inclusion seems like an odd afterthought. I had high hopes for this one, particularly because of the solid cast, but the film just can’t seem to get out of its own way. I’m really not sure why the director turned what could (and should) have been treated as an uplifting feel-good story, and turned it into a droning and moody bummer-fest. 1.5 stars for me… upgraded to 2 to be kind. I just can’t recommend this one at all.

Casey Affleck could read the phone book and be captivating and he helps bring to life the story of Donnie Emerson and his brother Joe who get discovered after they made a record 30 years prior. It's about family and love and despite being a touch formulaic, it's the good kind! Upbeat mostly, but the 3rd act takes a couple turns it just doesn't need from a storytelling standpoint. Final Score: 7.8/10
