Dedh Ishqiya' is a film that's way more

'Dedh Ishqiya' is a film that's way more fun than the original, which loses it all from me whenever I watch it. It's a sharply made black comedy which is Abhishek Chaubey's best Hindi film yet, which benefits from splendid performances especially by Madhuri Dikshit, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. Huma Qureshi is also compelling. This is above all a thrilling and enchanting world, and you'll easily buy into it.

Rating: 7.2/10 ⭐️ I expected a standard follow-up, but it completely shifts into a grand, aristocratic poetry vibe while keeping that gritty, double-crossing core. What Worked: The sweeping palace shots totally nail the fading aristocratic aesthetic. I really appreciate how the story highlights the empty consequences of greed, the main duo's crime cycle literally never pays off for them. Naseeruddin Shah brings incredible old-school class to his fake Nawab persona, and Madhuri Dixit is absolutely elegant. The classical music brings so much authentic cultural weight and a moody atmosphere. The Cuts: Focusing so heavily on the poetry contest meant the middle part really dragged for me while I waited for the real plot to kick in. The tone gets super jarring, mixing goofy slapstick humor with a dark plot. Plus, literally everyone is running a selfish scam. Not having a strong moral center or a traditional “good guy” to root for made it a bit tough to fully invest.
