Plot summary

The year is 1997, and World Peace seems to have come, with most classic weapons of mass destruction having been abandoned. However, orbiting the Earth there is the European/American space station FLORIDA ARKLAB, capable of controlling the weather at any location on the planet underneath. A civil project by nature, it might be abused as an offensive weapon, since it could deliver devastation to any potential adversary simply by creating natural disasters such as storms and floods. No wonder the space station soon becomes the central point in rising political tensions between East and West, next stop World War 3 (as indicated by the tagline "The end of our future has already begun"). We follow the main protagonist Billy Hayes, an astronaut aboard the station, as he wades through a plot of secrecy and sabotage trying to tell friend from foe in the process.

Probably Emmerich's first big Cinema production? Its still

Probably Emmerich's first big Cinema production? Its still in German. it was an ... hmmm..., ok movie. I just don't understand the link between the title of the movie and the story... yes, the space station is called Florida ARKlab... but thats it. 2 1/2 stars because it was good first try.

A student film, which stands up quite well

A student film, which stands up quite well against some of the less-developed professional productions out there. In a way, it seems a shame that Roland Emmerich subsequently went in for making epic trash movies such as Independence Day. Of course, there have been plenty of American films in which a courageous individual takes on the forces of an "evil" government and disobeys potentially harmful orders, but in a German film, this scenario is imbued with a different kind of cultural resonance. If Captain Kirk did it, he'd probably get a medal, but there are no such salubrious consequences here.

And this director made it big in Hollywood

And this director made it big in Hollywood? I don't know which is worse. This, which after all could be clasified as a student film, or Independence Day?
