Plot summary

As the country explodes under racial tensions after the assassination of Martin Luther King, writer Romain Gary, humanist and animal lover, and his wife, star Jean Seberg, civil rights activist, welcome an abandoned dog into their home, trained to jump at the mouths of blacks: a White Dog.

Racism, Reprogrammed

Chien blanc is adapted from Romain Gary's book, which used the adoption of a dog trained to attack Black people as a springboard for broader reflections on the nature of racism. Samuel Fuller's 1982 fictionalised take, White Dog, was a vicious, uncompromising genre film that left a deep impression on me as a kid.This new adaptation sticks closer to Gary's original text. Rather than focusing primarily on the dog's deconditioning by a trainer, it examines the increasingly strained relationship between Gary and his wife Jean Seberg, both involved in the late-1960s Civil Rights movement, albeit in different ways: Gary through writing and theory, Seberg through direct activism.Packed with archival footage and direct quotations from Gary's work, Chien blanc operates on two levels, encouraging reflection on how society instils conditioning-and whether unlearning reflexive hatred is truly possible. Its ending, shaped by contemporary concerns, diverges slightly from Gary's conclusion, factoring in the now often performative nature of support for major causes.The dog itself never becomes a truly lethal threat here: it bites, but never unleashes the savage brutality seen in Fuller's film. That's clearly by design. This isn't a killer-dog genre piece, but a somewhat stiff yet earnest interrogation of a politically engaged book from the 1960s.
