Plot summary

In 19th-century Styria, isolated teen Lara's quiet life is upended by the arrival of mysterious, beautiful Carmilla, a female vampire with whom she develops an intense, homoerotic bond. As Lara's life slowly drains, themes of forbidden desire, identity, and the supernatural are explored, culminating in Lara's discovery of Carmilla's vampiric nature and a confrontation with her ancient lineage.

I kept waiting for something to happen in

I kept waiting for something to happen in this film… but nothing ever really does. The pacing is extremely slow, and the story never seems to build toward anything meaningful. For a vampire film inspired by Carmilla, the atmosphere is there, but the substance is missing. The characters feel distant, the plot barely moves, and the supposed tension never truly arrives. By the end, it feels less like a mysterious gothic story and more like two hours of waiting for a moment that never comes. Maybe I’m missing something, but to me it was simply frustrating and dull. If you expect an engaging vampire story, you might be disappointed.

From the opening picture with the sun lens artifact and then all the macro images of insects this is addressed to sensitive adolescent girls. Apparently many professional reviewers fall in the category. 23 minutes is all I could tolerate.

Although you would think this would be a faithful adaptation of Sheridan Le Fanu's novella, the movie strips the story of most gothic and vampire elements. Ultimately, it muddles the overall theme, making it a questionable study of prejudice and intolerance.
