Plot summary

Peru, at the height of the political crisis of the 1980s. Georgina is a young woman from the Andes whose newborn daughter is stolen at a fake health clinic. Her desperate search for the child leads her to the headquarters of a major newspaper, where she meets Pedro Campos, a lonely journalist who takes on the investigation. Based on a true story.

Es una historia interesante. Pero la película pone

Es una historia interesante. Pero la película pone demasiado énfasis en el drama social en detrimento de la trama de investigación, lo que la hace innecesariamente lenta. Esto se corrobora por los amplios silencios y pausas intercaladas en la narración y por las largas escenas folclóricas. Creo que la directora pretendió abarcar demasiado en tan solo 100 minutos de tiempo. Existe otro problema y es el registro expresivo de la actriz principal que es muy limitado y no puede sostener la narración sin caer en el melodrama excesivo. Esta debería ser una razón más para dar mas énfasis a la trama policial. Al final lo que salva la película es la buena intención y la proclividad de un cierto sector de la crítica por ensalzar el cine sociológico.

I really can't see a flaw right here. The acting, skilled directing, cinematography and the story itself make a great and compelling portrait of grief and history.

Stark, introspective film that is not for casual

Stark, introspective film that is not for casual viewers. This independent Spanish film is concerned with the devastation facing a woman, one of a number of poor rural women like herself, who has her newborn infant stolen from her moments after its birth. It also deals with the one person willing to defy those too callous and cowardly to help the woman, Georgina. He himself is dealing with his own personal issues. The lead role is played by Pamela Mendoza in a performance that is overwhelming in her expression of outright grief. She refuses to simply give up one finding her daughter, but her life of poverty and little chance to prosper leaves her fighting the resignation so common in her world. It is an impressive first full-length film by writer/director Melina León. 3.4 stars
