Haven't seen the Richard Attenborough film, or read

Haven't seen the Richard Attenborough film, or read the book, so take this opinion with a grain of salt. Riseborough shines in her role as a young, plain, religious woman gone astray. Yes, her character seems implausible, but Riseborough's vulnerability and fragilely wilted performance fits the film well. Apparently Carey Mulligan, a favourite of mine, was in line for the role, but Riseborough is more than an able deputy. Sam Riley, on the other hand, is a bit scowly and hard to watch, with no evident shred of humanity. Seeing Helen Mirren, John Hurt, and Andy Serkis pop up does the film some good but also accentuates how boring Riley and his interpretation of the character are. The plot's simplicity loses you by a certain point, as the characters do not advance in the slightest. It really is unfortunate, because the film always hints at compelling scenarios without quite providing them and provides some nice scenery. The bleak final scene, though, is an immense highlight and serves to show that this one had something about it.

Why does Rose have to be so dim-witted

Why does Rose have to be so dim-witted to watch Pinkie combust? Her character was so passive and dull that it brought the entire point of the flick down to a pathetic dirge.
