The reviews are spot on! Why didn't I listen to them? This is a complete waste of time. It it so boring, pointless with no real meaning. Why would anyone make such a movie with a great cast? At least let there be a brilliant message. OMW, please please DO NOT download this!

ANOTHER FLOP OF THE YEAR....

This is an Oscar nomination movie. Won't bother watching it based on the comments. It's got 'high-quality' actors in it looking to make the red carpet in a few months. Pass.

After his strong effort in "The Black Phone" from earlier this year, Banks Repeta delivers another in this curious tale of a young boy ("Paul"), of Jewish antecedence, who must juggle the ambitions of his family to survive and thrive whilst adapting to a multi-racial community. His best (and possibly only) friend at school, "Johnny" (Jaylin Webb), is a bit of a mischief maker with whom his folks would rather he spent less time. His grandfather "Aaron" (Sir Anthony Hopkins) has a close bond with the young lad, and tries to encourage him to be fair and decent in an environment where that is not necessarily easy. There are multiple themes at work here. On the face of it, it is two children just trying to fit in - one from a more stable and prosperous background. There are also discriminatory overtones here too, delivered the more poignantly because they are not straightforward race-based themes, but ones of tolerance, aspiration and affection as can only really be seen effectively through the innocence of childhood; a childhood as yet untainted by an ingrained bigotry that even the most decent about him cannot claim to be immune from. Sir Anthony features sparingly, and his character is potent at serving as a conduit for the young "Paul" to try to make the right choices, however difficult and confusing. Webb also turns in a solid performance and offers us quite a contrast to the loved and cared for "Paul" as their friendship progresses towards a not altogether surprising conclusion. Anne Hathaway and Jeremy Strong are adequate as the parents, themselves striving to ensure that their two children attain a better life than they managed for themselves, and James Gray uses the New York environment well to give us an indication of the iniquities of their childhoods. It sort of peters out a bit, though, and somehow I felt that the ending rendered much of the film moot. Did "Paul" actually make any progress? See what you think. It's slow at times and is a bit on the lengthy side, but certainly worth a look.

Touching coming-of-age film with an abstruse title, widely misunderstood

Director James Gray recreates his childhood in Queens in 1980, growing up in a modest Jewish family and witnessing upheavals in his own life, including a dicey friendship with a kid from the other side of town and the trouble it brings. Among his family, he is closest with his aging, but inspiring grandfather who urges him to become his best self. His parents and older brother, on the other hand, are aloof and ossified, not on his wavelength at all. Any kid who grew up in New York City in the late 20th Century will find this engaging, fascinating and evocative. Other viewers might find this film meandering. It's a touching slice of life and an old school story about a young man who sees and understands the adversity that other kids less fortunate than him have to go through. Although this film's title turns out to be an esoteric reference to political rhetoric used at the dawn of the Reagan years, in itself it conveys little about what the real story is about. The Presidential election provides an historical backdrop, but the liberal family's political angst is more a nostalgic detail rather than a central storyline. Performances overall are quite good, with Anthony Hopkins doing the heavy lifting as the sage grandfather who is the backbone of the family. Banks Repeta is compelling as the protagonist. Jaylin Webb is likeable as a black kid trying to navigate an America that has just begun to integrate. Anne Hathaway makes an impression as the fiercely overbearing mother. Jeremy Strong is solid as the boy's working class father, although his character is disappointingly one-dimensional. Jessica Chastain is utilized in little better than a cameo appearance. Some voiced criticisms deserve a response. The notion that this film has no plot and no ending is a pretty clear misreading; I would hope that those who have watched were at least paying attention. Reviewers who have political grievances against this film have missed the point entirely. But for those who like an old school depiction of adolescent turmoil and budding social awareness, this film is grandly recommended.
