Well, after liking the original 2 movies, three was ok, now we have both our American Ninjas in one movie and that's the only reason it gets 1.5 stars from me. It was terrible. Just sweated through it this afternoon as I had nothing to do. I know why I never rented this now after number three.

As horribly quaint as American Ninja 4 might

As horribly quaint as American Ninja 4 might be, it consistently maintains a completely unironic, totally idiotic energy and an unrestrained blast of ninja nonsense along the way. Although it seems like these ninjas would rather be literally anywhere else. Cedric Sundstrom's direction is a minor improvement on his last attempt, but the ongoing attempts at breathing life into the paint-by-numbers screenplay fall continuously and hopelessly flat. He still can't shoot action very well. Granted, there are a few admittedly unexpected elements to keep us on our toes, particularly a bizarre second-act shift and somewhat ballsy shift into Mad Max territory, but ultimately it's unable to compensate for the pervasively underwhelming vibe. Sadly Steve James doesn't appear so Bradley is paired up with Dwayne Alexandre who does a reasonably good job as the nerdy sidekick, because this is the 1990s after all, while Dudikoff returns to dominate the second half of the film, taking over as the protagonist midway through and attempting to make sense of a plot that involves jungle ninjas, Islamic terrorists and a British mercenary all of whom want to blow up New York. The score is, once again, halfway decent, as is the theme song that closes the film but for all intents and purposes, American Ninja 4: The Annihilation does provide some half decent entertainment and quality cheese factor to keep it from being completely disposable. Still confused about the sequel's subtitles though.

At its best it is marginally funnier than the 3rd movie, but sadly those moments are few and far between. Without Steve James there just aren't any good actors. Also painfully slow towards the end.
