Plot summary

A hobo played by Barnard Hughes decides it's time to go home. Drifting from place to place, Hughes finds himself in his hometown of Salt Lake City at Christmas time. Here he hopes to close old wounds and be reunited with his unforgiving son played by Gerald McRaney, and get to know the grandchildren he has never met. McRaney, still resenting the fact that Hughes ran out on his family 25 years earlier, gives his father only one day with his grandkids; after that, he's expected to leave and never come back. All the while Hughes' friends warn him that his son and the past are memories that are best left alone, and should leave, but he has to find out for himself.

This interesting teleplay touches on some serious reconciliation

This interesting teleplay touches on some serious reconciliation issues. Production values are above average for its genre, writing, direction, performances, editing, cinematography and music. The participation of the always reliable Barnard Hughes was my reason for watching this, and a good decision it was. Other performances also come across as well cast and quite well realised. It might not be a movie for all tastes but anyone who enjoys looking back at how families can drift apart and their efforts at reconciliation should find something to appreciate. While some aspects may be a little romanticised for the seasoned cynics, thankfully, unlike a Spielberg production, the adult characters' situations ring true and the children are likeable (for a change). The late William Hickey (The Name of the Rose ‘86) as Cincinnati Harold is always a curious watch. Hearst Entertainment has given us a different kind of Christmas story to admire, for those who care. Dare I say...Merry Christmas!

While the story is neither gut-wrenching nor overly-dramatic

While the story is neither gut-wrenching nor overly-dramatic, it does gently tell a variation on a common tale in families: hurt and trouble that often comes between elderly fathers and grown sons and the healing that can take place with they both want it. Simple enough and not too sappy. I remember this TV film when it originally aired back in '87 and enjoyed it again this year on DVD. Good cast. McRaney and Hughes are two of my favorite actors and I've come to enjoy Wendy Crewson from the Santa Clause movies.
