If you're a fan of film noir, this movie is for you. A twisting story that encourages the viewer to get involved with the characters in ways not necessarily expected initially. Great acting from all of the principals that puts you through the emotional wringer. If you enjoyed 'Red Rock West', then this is the perfect companion piece. As a bonus, the music is also no less than outstanding. Highest recommendation!
All right! Friends who have seen this recommended it highly. Very much appreciated ... so, THANK YOU, FREEMAN!
Not for everyone (i.e. fans of superhero flicks and the fantastical will be bored), 'Ironweed' is a genuine masterpiece in many ways. Heartbreaking at its core, 'Ironweed' depicts life during the Depression as lived by the disenfranchised and desperate. The always riveting Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep are outstanding; the daily drudgery can be seen in their body language, read in their faces and eyes. Their personal stories requires many shades of subtlety in the performances , and the twosome prove again why their acting skills have been so highly regarded through the years. And Tom Waits surprises as a fellow derelict by proving he has the chops to hang with elite actors. If you enjoy thoughtful dramas as lived through the vagaries of everyday existence among the alcoholic and homeless who somehow maintain a sense of dignity under the most squalid of circumstances, this movie is a must see,
Utter brilliance. Some have walked away in the first 30 minutes, as the opening scenes don't (yet) connect and seem confusing. Stick with it! It all makes sense in the end, and the result is a character-driven realistic and gangster film that's unlike any other. Utter brilliance, highlighted by Ennio Morricone's deeply felt score. IMO, this is Sergio Leone's masterpiece.
