Watch this for the cinematography and eerie atmosphere, not for the cardboard actors and terrible dubbing
I would rarely speak badly of a Glass Eye Pix or anything where Larry Fessenden is involved in, but I have to admit this was bordering on unwatchable. Aiming for slow building tension needs good acting and some kind of comprehensive plot. This film lacks that, and tries to compensate with hallucinogenic jump scares, geeky references to Polanski's "Repulsion" etc. etc. Watch Repulsion instead. Or better yet, watch The House of the Devil from 2009 which does everything this film tries to do but perfectly
One of the most insanely stupid movies ever made. Unbearable, unwatchable. Give it 20 years and it MIGHT become a cult b-movie, but for now leave it alone
Thematically a nice companion to Wheatley's other film "A Field In England" - which also deals with the occult and the possibility of a supernatural aspect of psychedelic mushrooms. This film lacks the wit and unexpected plot twists of its predecessor, and reads more like a depressing account of mental disease and bad trips. Worth a watch for the acting efforts of Reece Shearsmith who elevates the humour and creepiness. I can't fight the idea that they should have named the film Parnag Fegg, although the current title reflects the generic blandness of it.
There's some flaws weighing this film down, most having to do with a low budget and inexperienced actors. Despite that, this is a must watch for anyone interested in science fiction of the cerebral kind. This is what we all hoped that Richard Stanley's Color Out Of Space would have been. Surreal deadpan comedy, an unpredictable story and lots of WTF moments in between - I'd recommend several viewings to take it all in.
