Nobody is trying to beat Afghanistan because that's not really the problem. Militarily speaking nobody has had a problem defeating them, its just that nobody has been able to assimilate them into their view for Afghanistan. Afghanistan has a very rich culture that prides itself on tradition. What every empire that's come along has failed to do is they've failed to persevere over a people who are built to persevere over most things. These people don't want to change and join the rest of the advanced world, most of these people want to go about their lives living in the traditions that they have always known. No empire has come along and presented the cultural leaders of Afghanistan a reason to change the current status quo.
