This movie is inspired by historical events, and is based in part on research material from the book "Red Tails, Black Wings: the men of America's Black Air Force" by John B. Holway. It was filmed on locations in the Czech Republic, Croatia, Italy and Slovenia. Several special effects and animation companies were involved in the spectacular flying and dog fight sequences in this George Lucas production. In the December 2012 issue of "Aeroplane" magazine Simon O'Connell, the aerial co-ordinator, describes how the film's aircraft were acquired and used on the set. It's well worth reading.

The characters in this movie are true to life - typical casual New Zealanders, even the country constable ! A must-see movie for everyone.
