This is a modern Hindi Language remake of a classic story by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, a Bengali author of the 19th century. Devdas was a cult classic and a shocker of the time. It explores the relationship between aristocracy and love, and the forbidden thresholds of desire, duty and class. Paro and Devdas are inseparable companions from childhood, though Devdas comes from a socially higher feudal family than Paro. Both are rich. However, though they love each other, because of perceived differences in status, their parents oppose the marriage and Paro (Parvati) is married off to a feudal landlord who is higher than Devdas but who is old enough to be their father. Devdas becomes distraught and takes to drink. Paro continues to love him, but though Devdas ultimately dies just outside her marital house, and though she runs to be with him, the unwritten but very tangible boundaries of Bengali middle-class values does not allow her to cross the threshold and see him, as he dies.
