Nothing like complaining that something STOLEN is the wrong resolution ?....Can I suggest you look out a window you might find some clouds to yell out while you're at it....lolz
It is hard to rationalize what people really want when they are complaining about the quality of something they have stolen..... Mind you the whining about it not being in 4K or the subs being impeded or there are no subs at all is just indicative of many of the foreign language movie reviews seen on this site. What this place desperately needs is active moderation of the review section for a start.... As for the movie itself. It was enjoyable enough if somewhat formulaic (you know, man does something stupid, monster turns up, man finds monster, military complex shoots first and worries about anything else second, loners get togther to trap monster and loners kill the monster.....basically the plot to the last lot of Godzilla movies and the various King Kong remakes). Oscar material this movie is not but it is a well made peice of check your brain in the door and be entertained stuff. Well worth watching.
Well, what a movie. Not exactly rife with deep philosophical under tones but if you check your brain in at the door and don’t aim too high, you should not be overly disappointed. The story itself is pretty straight forward and is not what I would call taxing. Plants, mad scientists buggering with things they shouldn’t be, end of the world, yada, yada, yada. The staging of the story was, well, nothing flash. The CQI and the set pieces were at best acceptable and at worse ordinary sometimes boarding on the laughable. For example, it was more than noticeable that as the characters were seen traversing the landscape between the high-rise buildings and the cars on the street in some scenes, the definition of the wider horizon of the landscape was decidedly flat in nature indicating an obvious green screen effect. It certainly screamed low budget. The other part of the staging of the story, the actors, is a different kettle of fish. Some of the acting was fine, some of the acting was more than a little melodramatic and some was just horrible. Case in point on this, the gentleman who played the rotund science tech “21” (and the comedy foil) simply put couldn’t act. This criticism maybe harsh though as I watched the Chinese language version with subtitles (I cannot watch dubbed movies) and a lot of his lines obviously lost a lot in translation. Finally, the child. This child should win the Oscar for being the single most unwarranted and annoying child character in any movie since Dakota Fanning played Rachel Ferrier in Steven Spielberg's 2005 War of the Worlds. Certainly, as the film progresses and the child becomes progressive more annoying you hope that the plants do the viewers a favor and eat her and by the end of the movie, you are left wondering if the father saved the right person.... As the movie goes, quite the mixed bag but I have seen worse so maybe 6 out of 10.
I think this movie was a victim of it's own legacy. While not a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination, there where things that sadly lacked. For instance, Pinhead. For those that have negatively commented on Pinhead being a woman, you know little of the source material, The Hellbound Heart. But in saying that Jamie Clayton's portrial of the Hell priest lacked a certain gravitas found in earlier Doug Bradly outings. Her lines didn't really match the solemnity of the character that many of us already knew. And what of the puzzle box itself? From what little I remember of the original story, it was as in the original movies, opening the lament configuration was ultimately a choice in search of great rewards in the form of having your desires met. The box and by extention the Cenobites where all about this goal. However with this new movie it is not made altogether clear what solving the box ultimately acheived for the solver and only towards the middle of the movie it became more about getting stabbed by the box rather than ultimately solving it (for the gift of one's desires) The movie itself as I said was not a bad movie, it does pale when held up to the blood red glow of the Hellraiser movies that have (mostly) gone before it.
Pretty much a "check your brain in at the door" movie. My opinion would be, it is unfair to say this was a bad movie as much as would be to say that it had any sort of redeeming value. My impression is if you have not played the game that the movie was based upon, this movie did not mean much in the way of creating any sort of impression, good or bad. Sure the action sequences where good but without any sort of significant plot to speak of, to what end?
