@opuschao ... yeah, this is likely true, but the term fanatic is from latin (fanaticus) and also had very different connotations. For example "divinely inspired" or "inspired by god). Theres also an argument it came from "fancy" which was used to describe those who follow a particular sport, notably prize fighting (i.e. he was a prize fighting fancy). So it doesn't always have this connotation to fanatic in how you suggest.
