This was a rough watch. This would be straight to streaming if it wasn't part of a supposedly beloved franchise. Probably 20 minutes worth watching over the entire run time. Also, ScarJo was really phoning it in.
There are four different edits of Dawn of the Dead 1978. 1.) The US Theatrical Cut (2hs 7m 5s), 2.) The Cannes or 'Extended Cut (2hrs 19m 26s), 3.) The European or Argento Cut (1hr 59m 7s) and 4.) a fan edit called, The Extended Mall Hours Cut (2hrs 34m 53s). It's also important to note, however, that the 139-minute extended cut is NOT Romero's director's cut. The extended cut was actually edited down into what became the theatrical cut, and the 127-minute cut is Romero's preferred version of Dawn of the Dead. Making things more complicated is the existence of the 119-minute European cut, which was edited together by Italian horror icon Dario Argento, who produced the film. This cut is faster-paced, and removes some dialogue-heavy scenes and comedic bits, choosing instead to amp up the horror and action factors, with a score that's almost entirely Goblin. The fan edit tries to add all available material together, which is why it's the longest cut.
