Plot summary

Set during the Bosnian war in the early 1990s, Luka is a mild-mannered railway clerk whose life is turned upside down, not just by the outbreak of the war, but when his wife runs off with a local musician. Then Luka's son is conscripted and eventually captured in the fighting. To recover his son, Luka is commanded to guard a pretty young Muslim nurse who will be used in a hostage swapping operation.

Surrealistic, Funny and Romantic (12,205 – 07 Aug 2008 / 16 Jan 2026) In 1992, the engineer Luka is constructing a railway and lives with his son Milos and his wife Jadranka. Milos expects to be invited to play in the Partisan's team, but is called up to the army. Jadranka leaves Luka and Milos is captured by the enemy. The nurse Sabaha is abducted by Bosnian soldiers, and Luka hosts her as prisoner since she might be exchanged per Milos. Luka and Sabaha fall in love with each other but Jadranka returns and the trade of Milos per Sabaha is accepted. "Zivot je Cudo", a.k.a. "Life Is a Miracle" (2004), begins funny and annoying at the same time. But after the departure of Milos and Jadranka, the story becomes attractive, when Sabaha appears. This film deserved a happy and commercial ending, with Luka and Sabaha leaving together. Another plus is that it does not focus the cruelties of this bloody war. My vote is eight. Title (Brazil): "A Vida É um Milagre" ("The Life is a Miracle")

Kusturica can make from something as terrible as

Kusturica can make from something as terrible as the war in the Balcanes a tender story about dreams, love, people's habits with some comedy too. Some moments the film are some kind surrealistic. Special mention for the mule "Milica" that is protagonist of some peak moments of the film.

I love Kusturica's chaotic style, the madcap physical

I love Kusturica's chaotic style, the madcap physical comedy (a lot of it here provided by a middle-aged woman, which is fun in itself). The way that people knock things over, fall down a lot without care, and are casually, harmlessly violent with one another is very entertaining. The lengthy runtimes don't do it any favours, though; by the end you can end up just exhausted and ready to leave all the zaniness behind, instead of desiring more. And the plot is a little trite and predictable. But I liked it.
