The opening scene is Horrorific, as it was

The opening scene is Horrorific, as it was some type of Terrifying Archaic Ritual. The atmosphere that we're surrounded with is rather gloomy, unsure if it's intentional. There is so much chaos going on and uncharacteristic behavior I'm thinking by the expressions of our characters. You're supposed to be safe with your family, but this film changes that perception of that Supposition. I do so enjoy Folklore Horror films, as they have so much Ancient Culture to pull from. The film being set in Ireland is just so much fun, and I'm thrilled to see how far they'll go with the story. The film is everything I could hope for in the Folk Horror Genre, I can only hope others will watch and enjoy this nicely crafted film as I have. This will be 1 of the 1st physical media I will buy in 7 years, along with Willem Dafoe's Antichrist.

Irish horror, folklore cross done well.

Unlike some other reviews suggest: this movie is not boring. And Samhain / Halloween was most certainly around in Ireland and celebrated with bonfires etc. A long, long time before this movie was set.In my opinion, You Are Not My Mother is a simple, atmospheric horror movie. It has the feel of the Samhain / Halloween time of year in Ireland. For the most part the acting is strong. I found the scenes between the mother and daughter to be unsettling in a quiet way; which made them all the more frightening. It is edge of your seat from opening scenes to the end credits? No. Does it scream big budget, with lots of effects? No.But it doesn't need to. It does a damn good job of marrying folklore / mythology with horror, while also touching on the subjects of mental health and family relationships.
